TOPICAL PHYTOTHERAPY FOR WOUND HEALING IN RATS BY USING “GOLDEN PASTEâ€
Maryam Javed
Abstract
The comparative efficacy of curcumin was evaluated by using a group of Sprague-Dawley Albino rats with epithelial wounds. A dorsal lesion was created on rats with a sharp surgical blade and rats were subjected to the application of turmeric paste (containing curcumin as active ingredient). Turmeric paste was prepared in petroleum jelly and it is also known as “golden pasteâ€. Application of nitrofurazone cream was done on the control group for comparative evaluation. Treatments were repeated for seven post trauma days. On day 7th, the healing effect of both medicinal and herbal products was evaluated by comparing the wound size, inflammatory signs and overall activity of rats. As a result, comparable effect of both medicines was observed. It was illustrated that curcumin, rather being economical herbal source, was equally effective to heal the epithelial wounds, to reduce all signs of inflammation and to decrease the lesion diameter.
