OUYANG Li-ting and GENG Wen-juan
Abstract

The wild European plum (Prunus domestica L.) is an endangered plant in the world. In this study, we investigated it’s the microspore formation and male gametophyte development. Results showed that the wild European plum anther had four pollen sacs and its developmental type is basic type. And the endothecium of anther is fibrously thickened. Tapetum conforms to secretory type. Cytokinesis was of the simultaneous type. Moreover, most of the microspore tetrads are in tetrahedral arrangement, and some are symmetrical. The mature pollen grains are two-cell type. Additionally, a series of anomalous phenomena were observed during the anther development in the wild European plum, which including the early dissolution of tetrads in callose, abnormal development of tapetum, inconsistent differentiation of the cells related with male development, dry or shriveled pollens. This may be the main reason for the poor pollination and fertilization rate in the wild European plum pollen.
