Bojana Veljkovic
Abstract
Ethnobotanical survey on traditional use of the wild raspberry (Rubus ideaus L.) was conducted on nine sites belonging to regions of southwest (SWS) and southeast (SES) part of Serbia. Researched regions belong to high-mountain rural part of the central Balkan, mainly populated by Serbian folk of the Orthodox religion. In total, 93 respondents were interviewed about medicinal, food and cosmetic uses. In the SWS region, the most frequent use of wild raspberry leaf is linked to gastrointestinal disorders and prostate inflammation. In the SES region, the leaves are mostly used for prevention and healing of gynecological disorders, during pregnancy and lactation. Local population of SWS region uses fruits manly for preparation of the syrup juice, the fruit preserve and in desserts, while in SES the fruits are most frequently used for preparation of nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages. Our results indicate some novel information on use of the wild raspberry in Serbia and in the Balkan, such as treatments of prostate inflammation, use during breastfeeding and against eye inflammation.
