EFFECTS OF ETHEPHON ON THE GROWTH AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF DALBERGIA ODORIFERA
Wang Yuelin
Abstract
The effects of ethylene injected at different concentrations into the trunks of Dalbergia odorifera were investigated with regard to its growth and photosynthetic characterisitics. The research object was 6-8cm DBH Dalbergia odorifera specimens set up with E0.1%, E0.5%, E2.5%, and CK4 treatments. Calculations were carried out on the growth indicator increment、SPAD, SLA,WUE and photosynthetic parameters. Results failed to show a significant difference in ΔD between treatments. There was, however, a notable 67.39% reduction in ΔH of E2.5%, 55% compared with CK and E0.1%. There was consistency in the changing rule of ΔV with ΔH, while E2.5% was significantly lower than CK and E0.1% by 66.68% and 60.14%, respectively. The SPAD value of Dalbergia odorifera was affected by Ethephon to the order of E0.1%> E0.5%> CK> E2.5%. E0.1%, E0.5% leaf dry weight and leaf area were significantly higher than E2.5%. SLA differed significantly between treatments, with an order of E0.1%>E0.5%>CK>E2.5%. A significant negative correlation between E0.1%, E0.5%, and E2.5% ethylene treatment SLA and WUE was ascertained by Pearson correlation analysis. Photosynthetic parameters displayed an initial increase in Pnmax followed by its subsequent reduction as ethephon concentration rose. E0.1% and E0.5% displayed important elevations of 38% and 26.22%, respectively, contrasting with CK. Isat which showed a modest reduction alongside ethephon concentration after injection. However, all were higher than CK, with E0.5% being the highest. Ic of all ethephon treatment Ic were lower than CK. Results suggest that applying an appropriate quantity of ethephon can increase SPAD of Dalbergia odorifera. It is also suggested that photosynthetic characteristics such as SLA, Pn and Isat, can be positively affected, and that proper ethephon application can lead to increased tree growth and DBH.
