Abstract
THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF DIFFERENT PSIDIUM GUAJAVA EXTRACTS USING ANIMAL MODELS ABSTRACT We prepared n-hexane, chloroform, and methanol extracts from the leaves of P. guajava and attempted to explore anti-inflammatory activities in animal models. Inflammatory edema was induced in Sprague Dawley rats by carrageenan, histamine, serotonin, dextran, xylene and anti-inflammatory potential of plant extracts were analyzed via autacoids suppression. Highest prevention of edema was observed with n-hexane and chloroform extracts by histamine-induced paw edema which were higher than indomethacin. Methanol fraction produced maximum prevention in serotonin-induced paw edema that was also higher than indomethacin inhibition. When inhibition tendency of extracts was compared by various agents, n-hexane produced inhibition that induced by histamine (84%), serotonin (79%), xylene (65%), carrageenan (61%) and dextran (56%) respectively. Similarly, chloroform extract exhibited inhibition of edema induced by histamine (82%), carrageenan (80%), serotonin (56%), xylene (46%), and dextran (42%) respectively while methanol showed inhibition by serotonin (64%), histamine (63%), carrageenan (61%), dextran (42%) and xylene (32%) respectively. Phytochemical and GC-MS analysis showed the presence of different constituents but the highest concentration of 2-ethylhexyl phthalate was known for its anti-inflammatory activity. Statistical comparison showed non-significant difference among the effects of different extracts, however, the activity of n-hexane was significantly higher than other extracts. All models proved that P. guajava possess substantial amount of potential for fall of edema and it might be attributed to autacoid inhibition. There was no any acute toxicity observed with extracts. Keywords: anti-inflammatory, ameliorative, autacoids, guava, edema.
