Abstract

Traditional medicine has a great contribution in the treatment of many chronic diseases. Therefore the main purpose of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant value and the potential of inhibiting α-amylase and α-glucosidase of Farsetia jacquemontii in district Bannu, Pakistan. Antioxidant activity was performed by using reagents; 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) stable free radicals, 2, 2′- azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4). The antidiabetic activity was performed by inhibition of α-amylase and α-galactosidase with IC50 values of 290µg/ml and 240µg/ml respectively. The extract was found to possess antioxidant potential depending on concentration in a cell-free system. Antioxidant potential was highest against ABTS with IC50 followed by 98μg/mL MoO4 100μg/mL, DPPH 149μg/mL and H2O2 250μg/mL. The antidiabetic activity was due to inhibition of α-amylase and α-galactosidase with IC50 values of 290µg/ml and 240µg/ml respectively. Based on the results, it can be concluded that Farsetia jacquemontii have antioxidant and antidiabetic potential.
