BIOFORTIFICATION OF WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) WITH CALCIUM THROUGH PRIMING AND FOLIAR APPLICATION
NOREEN ZAHRA1
Abstract
Wheat (Triticum aestivium L.) is major cereal crop, however, like other staple cereals it contains lower level of essential nutrient such as Calcium, which is also an essential element for plant growth. In present working we explored that wheat grain can be fortified by using the priming and foliar application of calcium. Calcium is very important for our bones and teeth health, about 90% calcium is part of them. Calcium helps in muscles contraction, nerves, brain and heart, it also adds in to stop the bleeding process. So, calcium is necessary for keeping the brain working and heart beating, however, it is not present in enough quantities in our diet where the body takes it from our bones. Calcium plays indispensable role in signaling, structure making and acting as an essential micronutrient for plants and animals. Lower intake of calcium dietary supplements resulted in serious health consequences over time. However, recent development of nutrition transformation in a cost effected manner is predominately leading to a step by step change in targeted research of wheat. Priming and foliar application elevated the calcium (Ca2+) content in wheat grain and could pave the way for development of calcium fortified nutraceutical wheat crop.
