MUTAGENIC EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY OF INDIVIDUAL AND COMBINATION TREATMENTS OF GAMMA RAYS AND EMS IN URDBEAN (VIGNA MUNGO (L.) HEPPER)
SONU GOYAL
Abstract
The usefulness of a mutagen depends both on its effectiveness and efficiency. Present investigation was carried out to find out the effectiveness and efficiency of various mutagenic treatments of gamma rays and EMS in two varieties viz., T-9 and Pant U-30 of urdbean. In both the varieties, the mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency varied not only between the treatments of a mutagen but also between the mutagens. The order of mutagenic effectiveness as determined on the basis of mutated plant progenies was EMS >gamma rays + EMS >gamma rays. Three criteria viz., seedling injury (Mp/I), pollen sterility (Mp/S) and meiotic abnormalities (Mp/Me) were taken into consideration to determine the efficiency of the mutagens. The combination treatments of gamma rays + EMS were found to be the most efficient followed by individual treatments of EMS and gamma rays in inducing the mutations.
