TOXICITY AND TOLERANCE IN ACACIA NILOTICA L. TO LEAD AND IRON UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS
TABINDA NOREEN
Abstract
In this investigation toxicity and tolerance of Acacia nilotica L. was studied for lead (Pb) and iron (Fe) treatment under laboratory conditions. Seed germination of A. nilotica showed that increased concentration (05, 10, 15 and 20 ppm) of both metals significantly (p<0.05) reduced seed germination which was more conspicuous for Pb treatments. Seedling growth variables i.e. root, shoot and seedling length, root/shoot ratio, seedling fresh and dry weights also reduced significantly (p<0.05) in metals treatment. Seedlings growth variables of A. nilotica gradually reduced with increasing concentrations of both metals especially Pb as compared to Fe. The inhibitory effects of applied metals had the following order Pb > Fe of sequence at different concentrations. Tolerance indices determined for both metals clarified that increasing concentrations of metals declined the tolerance of A. nilotica but this reduction was more prominent for Pb as compared to Fe treatments.
