FIRST REPORT OF BLACK ROT OF CARROT CAUSED BY ALTERNARIA RADICINA IN PAKISTAN
SIDRA JAVED
Abstract
Carrot (Daucus carota L.) roots infected with black rot disease were collected during November 2016 from local markets of Lahore, Pakistan. Dry, black, decayed and sunken lesions of fungus were observed on the surface of infected roots. Fungus was isolated from the infected roots on potato dextrose agar medium. Koch’s postulates confirmed the pathogenicity of the isolated pathogen. Based on growth rate, and cultural and conidial morphology, the fungus was identified as Alternaria radicina Meier, Drechsler & Eddy. Identification of the isolated fungus was further confirmed by rDNA sequencing. The sequence was deposited in GenBank with accession number LT799973. The fungal specimen was deposited in Fungal Culture Bank of Pakistan. As per our knowledge this is the first report of black rot of carrots in Pakistan.
