Title: Estimation of variability, heritability and genetic advance for various yield-related traits in tomato (Solanum Lycopersicon MILL.)

Adnan Rasheed*
Abstract

The present research was conducted to investigate the degree of genetic variability for yield-related traits in tomato. Significant genetic variability was present for all traits studied as revealed buy analysis of variance. Nine parents and 15 F1s were used in the experiment. As per results, genotypic coefficient of variability and phenotypic coefficient of variability were recorded higher for yield plant-1, number of fruits cluster-1, etc. which showed the presence of large genetic variability and scope of selection for improvement of these traits. Heritability estimates were found higher for all traits viz. No. of flowers cluster-1 along with single fruit weight and yield plant-1 etc. The genetic advance was found higher for single fruit weight while highest genetic advance as % of mean coupled with higher heritability was recorded for yield plant-1 along with no. of fruits cluster-1 etc. Nagina x Continental was the highest yielding hybrid (3kg) which could be further selected for varietal development. Current findings showed that additive gene action is present and hence the selection of these traits in segregating generations based on phenotypic performance would be more effective for further improvement in tomato. Selection of superior hybrids would be highly beneficial to increase indigenous seed production in Pakistan.
