A COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF POMOLOGICAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL TRAITS IN DATE PALM (PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA L.) GERMPLASM THROUGH MULTIVARIATE APPROACH

Riaz Ahmad
Abstract

Date palm is economically main fruit crop all over the world. Information regarding the genetic variability and inter-relationship among fruit traits is facilitating the plant breeders to efficiently exploit the date palm germplasm for introduction of elite genotypes. Present study was conducted to examine genetic variation among different date palm genotypes collected from different research organizations of Pakistan using pomological and phytochemical traits. The biplot analysis revealed that genotypes Dhakki, Chohara and Kupra showed the highest fruit and pulp weight. Similar variation were observed in mean values as in biplot analysis. Moreover, biplot analysis also showed that genotypes Champa kali and Shakri are best for TSS and total sugars. Similar variation were observed in mean values as in biplot analysis. Cluster analysis on the basis of pomological and phytochemical traits divided 50 cultivars into seven clusters. Correlation matrix revealed that pulp weight had strong relationship with fruit weight, fruit length and fruit diameter. Strong correlation was found between antioxidant capacity, antioxidant activity and total phenolic content. The knowledge on genetic variation, genotype-by-traits comparison as well as relationship among several pomological traits are effective in developing the breeding population through best allelic combinations and employing selection approaches. Key words: Biplot analysis, Cluster analysis, Correlation matrix, Genetic diversity, Genetic association.
