Abstract

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is one of the cash and industrial crops commonly grown throughout the world. This plant is important for the agriculture sector in Turkey, with high-quality tobacco varieties being produced in different regions in the country. This study aimed to examine important morphological properties and yield of tobacco cultivar and genotypes under the conditions of Bolu province in Turkey in 2015 and 2016. Plant height (43.17-142.00 cm), leaf length (12.78-28.67 cm), leaf width (7.60-14.00 cm), ovality value (1.47-2.96), number of leaves (10.33-31.89 no leaf plant-1), fresh leaf weight (90.11-646.30 kg da-1), and dry leaf weight (21.85-119.74 kg da-1) were determined in the experimental years. The highest fresh leaf weight was observed in the AR-1 (525.0 kg da-1) cultivar and ESR-7 (646.30 kg da-1) genotype in the first year and BSR-2 (358.22 kg da-1) and MR-1 (309.11 kg da-1) genotypes in the second year. A correlation analysis was conducted between these values. A dendrogram was constructed to determine the relationships between the investigated plants based on morphological properties and yield values. Characterizations of Turkish tobacco genotypes in this study is hoped to guide future work of researchers, breeders and farmers/tobacco growers on a global scale.
