The Impact of technology adoption on Income and Food Security of Smallholder Cassava Farmers: Empirical Evidence from Indonesia

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship among new technology adoption, income and food security of smallholder farmers in East Java. Data from a survey of 300 smallholder cassava farmers from three regencies: Malang, Blitar, and Trenggalek, East Java Province is analyzed to shed light on these issues. Propensity score matching is used to analyze the impact of new technology adoption on both income and food security on smallholder cassava farmers. The results of the econometric analysis reveal that there is heterogeneity impact of adoption. We find that adoptions have a positive effect on farming income and household dietary diversity. However, the adoptions are negatively affecting smallholder farmer coping strategies to insecurity food. The results suggest that improving technology could improve the welfare of smallholder farmers. Although, it is a special need toward the policy design and intervention government that could reduce vulnerability on food security.
