EFFICACY OF INDIGENOUS PLANT OILS ON CALLOSOBRUCHUS MACULATUS (L.) IN CHICKPEA
Zubair Ahmed Soomro
Abstract
Pulse crop is attacked by several insect pests but Callosobruchus maculatus is a major insect pest in storage. Recently, the focused has been diverted to use eco-friendly approaches to manage the pest populations including the use of botanical oils. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the insecticidal effect of four plant oils as pest protectants i.e. Azadirachta indica (T1), Gossypium hirsutum (T2), Brassica nigra (T3) and Erucas taiva (T4). The data were recorded for corrected mortality of pest, trend in pest population, puncture seed and seed weight of chickpea. Similarly, the effect was also observed on seed characteristics (seed germination%, root length and seed vigour). In results, the effect of botanical oils on corrected mortality of C. maculatus at different intervals indicated that the maximum mortality (45.45%) was observed on T2 after 24 hrs. Overall, the highest value for corrected mortality was noted (50.00%) for T2 and the lowest (32.00%) on T3. The overall lowest mean population of 71.67±14.92 and the lowest puncher seed 102.11±24.76 with minimum weight loss of 9.54g (final weight 90.46±2.11) was observed on T2. The results regarding effect of botanical oils on seed characteristics showed that storage of chickpea seed until a month was ideal. However, the best results were recorded after one month of preservation, on which maximum germination (100%) was noticed on T1 and control, maximum root length (3.263±0.6 cm) also on control followed by (2.413±0.35cm) on T2 and maximum vigor index (326.33) in control followed by T1 Neem oil. Jambo oil and neem oil is suggested to kill the insects. Based on these results, it is concluded that the seeds can be kept for three months with these botanical oils particularly with Jambo oil in order to avoid insect pests.
