EFFECT OF STORAGE TEMPERATURES ON THE GERMINATION TRAITS OF RICE
SAIRA SANA KHAN
Abstract
Storage of seeds is an essential and inevitable step in the life of a seed as long term preservation of genetic resources is possible, only by storing seed at the right temperature. Aim of this study is to observe the effect of high and low storage temperatures on seedling germination, vigor and other physiological characters between two Red rice landraces of Sindh with 4 commercial rice (Oryza sativa) varieties of Pakistan. Each genotype was stored at five different temperatures for five different durations and necessary data was collected on germination characteristics and seedling traits. Result of analysis of variance showed significant differences (P<0.05) between and within all the three treatments (genotypes, temperatures and durations) and among all the interactions for germination percentage, root length, shoot length, seedling vigor and amylase. Over all Red rice landraces showed highest mean in root length, shoot length, dry weight, fresh weigh, seedling vigor (Index-I and II) and amylase activity at all temperatures for all durations compared with 4 commercial varieties of Pakistan. In present study it was established that the Red rice landraces had the highest germination traits even after 60 days of storage and over all good performs even at 50 0C, showing great breeding potential for future improvement of crop. All commercial varieties show decease germination traits when stored at high temperatures whereas equal or greater performance was observed at low temperature storage.
