BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES AND GC-MS EVALUATION OF THE PHYTOCHEMICALS IN LEAF EXTRACTS OF POPULUS NIGRA
Naila Inayat
Abstract
In the present study, phytochemical constituents of Populus nigra leaves fractions were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). GC-MS analysis provided peaks of 30 different compounds in ethyl acetate fractions and 40 different compounds in methanolic fractions. Ethyl acetate fraction revealed the existence of 1,2-Cyclohexanediol (pyrocatechitol) (22.96%), 1,2-Benzenediol (Pyrocatechol) (16.98%) and Coumaran (15.67%) with highest peaks. However, methanol fraction contained Hendecane (16.82%), Duodecane (22.7%), Tridecane (20.12%) and Tetradecane (10.09%) with highest peaks. Further investigations were carried out to determine the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and human erythroleukemic cell line (HELA) efficacy of fractions-extracts. Results demonstrated that ethyl acetate fraction exhibited anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, whereas no significant results were observed for anti-cancerous HELA activity and dengue mosquito vector assay. No activity was reported in methanol fraction at all. From the results, it is manifested that P. nigra contains various bioactive compounds and it might be recommended as a plant of phytopharmaceutical importance.
