Abstract
The study of the stomata characteristics of P. retrofractum Vahl. (Piperaceae) is essential to be done to obtain information related to the study of phytopharmaca, physiology, anatomy, and taxonomy of plants. It can also be useful to ecologically identify the important characteristics which can be analyzed further in other studies. The purpose of this research was to determine the character of the stomata of P. retrofractum leaves on Java Island in Indonesia and to reveal the correlation between the characteristics of stomata and various environmental factors. The results of this research found that the stomata of P. retrofractum had tetracytic stomata type. The length of guard cells from 10 different locations ranged from 25.24µm to 31.83µm, while the average width was between 13.26 µm and 16.16 µm. The average index of the stomata at each sampling location observed was around 4.88% to 9.78%. The observation results showed that the density of the stomata ranged from 34.54 to 101.46 unit per mm2. The index and density highest from the ten different locations were found in Wonogiri, which was unique compared to the others. The results of the regression analysis showed that the environmental factors observed, namely air humidity, soil pH, temperature, and light intensity, did not have any correlation with the length of guard cells, index of stomata and density of stomata of the leaves of P. retrofractum in Java.
