PROFICIENCY OF DIFFERENT MEDIA, CARBON AND NITROGEN SOURCES ON MYCELIAL GROWTH OF OYSTER MUSHROOM

Rukhsana Afzal
Abstract

Abstract Mushrooms are substantial and gorgeous food constituent globally. In Pakistan, cultivation of Oyster mushroom is gaining attractiveness owing to fast mycelial growth rate as well as its adaptability to flourish in miscellaneous climatic circumstances. Mycelial growth in mushroom production is a key component, requires suitable cultural conditions. Thus, significant physiological factors i.e. culture medium, nitrogen and carbon sources of eighteen collected samples of oyster mushroom were optimized to acquire superb mycelial growth rate. Chickpea Extract Agar followed by Potato Dextrose Agar act as appropriate culture medium from seven tested media. Organic nitrogen sources i.e. peptone and yeast extract proved to be superior one over inorganic sources like Sodium nitrate and Potassium nitrate. Among carbon sources, two monosaccharaides (glucose and sucrose) stimulated the mycelial growth of all mushroom samples and metabolize the fungal activities. Key words: Mushroom, oyster, mycelial growth, culture, nitrogen and carbon sources.
