COMPARISON OF MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THYMUS DAENENSIS Celak AND THYMUS LANCIFOLIUS Celak IN EMPIRICAL CONDITIONS
SEYED AHMAD MOUSAVI
Abstract
Th. daenesis ÄŒelak is an endemic species to Iran and sometimes it is expressed with two subspecies of daenensis (ÄŒelak.) Jalas and lancifolius (ÄŒelak.) Jalas and sometimes as two distinct species. Therefore, the evaluation of morphological traits based on natural habitat samples cannot be sufficient to classify the problematic species, and only empirical methods can distinguish the effects of the environment, that is, the flexibility of the morphology from the established genetic variation. According to the results, they are separated into two distinct species with specific characteristics. The most important vegetative characteristics of these two species are the length of the stem and length and width of the leaves that the stems and leaves of Th. daenensis is longer than the Th. Lancifolius and the leaf width in the Th. Lancifolius is larger, hence the length to width ratio of the leaf is more in Th. daenensis. Th. lancifolius contains indumentum stems and leaves, while Th. daenensis is almost glabrous. In terms of vegetative characters, the differences between these species are seen mostly throughout the length of the sepal and its dent, and the length of the petal that is longer in the Th. lancifolius than the Th. daenensis
