Antiviral and Antibacterial Activities of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) - A Potent Disinfectant

Abstract
ABSTRACT- Eucalyptus is aboriginal to Tasmania and Australia. This rapid growing, lofty tree belongs to Myrtacea. Since prehistoric time it is used for many therapeutic and medicinal purposes. Plant contains phytoconstituents mainly flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins. Significiently it is used for volatile essential oil, pulpwood, honey source, shelter and also in cosmetics industries. Leaves and stem contains higher amount of phytoconstituents (Eucalyptol) responsible for insect repellant, antiviral, antibacterial, sinus congestion, common cold, anti inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal, hepatotoxic, antiseptic activities. Eucalyptus because of its pharmacological action has been used in pharmaceutical industries. For exploring its beneficial and medicinal effects in many other provinces continuous researches are necessary.
