Abstract
Alfalfa is the w0rld’s best f0dder due t0 its high pr0tein, high calcium, l0w fiber and high digestibility. Experiment was planned t0 find 0ut the p0tential in alfalfa breeding material f0r high bi0mass yield, quality traits and t0 understand pattern 0f inheritance f0r plant bi0mass and quality traits. Alfalfa gen0types were cr0ssed with line × tester cr0ssing design. The devel0ped breeding material was evaluated and best cr0ss c0mbinati0ns were selected. Presence 0f genetic variability in devel0ped germplasm directed t0 expl0it the better f0rage yield and quality related characters in alfalfa p0pulati0n. C0mbining ability analyses revealed vari0us magnitude as well as directi0ns. Fr0m the analysis 0f General c0mbining ability, it sh0wed that lines 533624, 601244, 206574, 263154 and 199279, testers 39483 and 40095 were c0nsidered as p0tential parents and cr0sses 533624 39483, 206574 39483, 533624 672753, 206574 672753, 262544 40095 and 37522 37530 were best cr0sses. Fresh plant weight, plant heights, plant dry weights and crude pr0tein were additively c0ntr0lled genetically. T0tal plant height, plant fresh weight, dry weights, N0. 0f n0des 0f each plant, its crude pr0tein c0ntents, ash c0ntents and f0rage yield per plant may be used as vital fact0rs f0r the betterment 0f bi0mass and f0rage yield and its quality. Selected cr0sses fr0m the present study are c0mparable with c0mmercial varieties. These cr0sses are suggested t0 devel0p the high and better yielding types in alfalfa.
