EVALUATION OF BIOACTIVITY AND PHYCOCHEMISTRY OF CHARA VULGARIS L. COLLECTED CANAL WATER FROM LAHORE
Nazim Hussain
Abstract
Methanolic extract of Chara vulgaris L., collected from canal water Lahore, was studied to evaluate its chemistry. Critical Phycochemistry revealed the presence of two fatty acids belong to saturated and other unsaturated class of fatty acids, two sterols and one diterpene was reported when analyzed through GC-MS, H-NMR and HR-MS. Hexadecanoic acid (C16:0) and 6-Octadecenoic acid (C18:1) were detected among saturated and unsaturated fatty acids respectively. β-Sitosterol and Cholesta-5,7-dien-3,beta-ol,3,5-dinitrobanzoate were identified among sterols and Phytol as diterpene. Bioactivity was studied by using methanolic, acetone, diethyl ether and chloroform extracts using agar well diffusion method. Methanolic extract showed strong antibacterial activity while less antifungal activity. The studied green alga Chara vulgaris L. showed least bioactivity as well low fatty acid contents.
