ETHNOMEDICINAL USES OF PLANT SPECIES OF ARAGAM AREA OF BANDIPORA, KASHMIR HIMALAYA

Abstract


Plants are being used since time immemorial to alleviate sufferings and ailments. The present study attempts to document the ethnomedicinally important plants used against several diseases by the tribal and rural community of Aragam area of district Bandipora. Data regarding the study was collected through semistructured and open-ended interviews by taking 83 informants. Ethnomedicinal data was analyzed using the two different statistical methods viz, relative frequency of citation (RFC) and family importance value (FIV). A total of 37 medicinal plants belonging to 24 plant families were mentioned, out of which Zizyphus jujube (RFC = 0.626) was the most cited species. The most cited plant family was Poaceae. The present study showed that either whole plant or some plant parts are used to cure different ailments. It was revealed that traditional uses of medicinal plants against different ailments plays a significant role in meeting the primary health care needs of the local community of the area. Traditional knowledge of plants is threatened due to a range of both natural and anthropogenic factors. Here is an immediate need of documentation to conserve this draining knowledge.
