Abstract
‘Medicinal plants’ play a central role in health care. Overall, Typha latifolia L. parts i.e., leaf, stem,-root and-fruit are very vigorous for the production of ‘secondary metabolites’ as-alkaloids, saponins, coumarins, terpenoids, tannins,-phlobatannins,-cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones and flavonoids by producing froth, precipitates or ring production showing the varying degree of positive results, hence possess the strong defense system. Later on, antimicrobial potential of T. latifolia L. leaves, stem, root and fruit parts were screened against gram negative bacteria viz., Xanthomonas axonopodis and Bordetella pertussis and ascomycetous fungus like Penicillium italicum and Botrytis cinreae separately. The activity was determined in petroleum ether→chloroform→methanol→distilled water extract by means of agar well-diffusion method. Results revealed antibacterial and antifungal well defined zone of inhibition. T. latifolia chloroform stem extract showed maximum-value of zone-of-inhibition against Xanthomonas axonopodis i.e., 11 ±1b and root methanol extract showed maximum-value of zone-of-inhibition against Bordetella-pertussis i.e., 19 ± 1a. While in the case of Penicillium italicum, petroleum-ether fruit extract showed ‘highest inhibitory zone’ i.e., 47 ± 2.64a and chloroform fruit extract showed maximum reading of zone-of-inhibition against Botrytis cinreae i.e., 44 ± 1a. Furthermore the total-antioxidant-assay and DPPH-assay of plant parts extracts in non-polar and polar solvents was also conducted showing different values in accordance to the existing standards as ‘BHT’ and ‘α-Tocopherol. Maximum total antioxidant assay was shown by stem extract in chloroform and methanolic extract of leaves while maximum DPPH assay value was showed by methanolic extract of root. The fallouts of this study thus sustenance the therapeutic usage of the studied plants and advocate that it can be used in the management of ailments due to the possession of useful biological properties.
