Effects of emergence and salinity on the photosynthetic and respiratory activities of ulva fasciata delile (chlorophyta)
ABSTRACT:
The rates of photosynthesis and dark respiration were measured in a littoral seaweed , ulva fasciata delile , gross photosynthesis and respiration initially increased during emergence , reached to a maximum at 20% desiccation and then gradually declined but the net photosybthesis constantly declined with the rise in the intensity of desiccation . a pretreatment of U. fasciata with salinities between 40 and 60 % o increased the gross photosynthesis , which however decreased after exposure to salinities below 30% o and higher than 70 o. treatment with fresh water reduced respiration , which increased over the

Notes o the seaweeds of Tripoli , Libya.
ABSTRACT:
Marine benthic algae collected from Tripoli and adjacent coastal areas containing 15 species of chlorophyta , 15 of phaeophyta and 17 of rhodophya are listed. It includes 7 new reports for Tripoli and 4 new records for the Libyan coast . a new combination, tenarea pustulata has been suggested. Some ecological notes have also been given.

Germination and growth responses of eupatorium odoratum to herbicides applied at various levels of soil deoth.
E.O. ETEJERE

Germination and growth responses of eupatorium odoratum to herbicides applied at various levels of soil deoth.
ABSTRACT:
The germination and growth responses of eupatorium odoratum to herbicides applied at various levels of soil depth is demonstrated . germination of E. odoratum seeds was completely inhibited by EPTC or molinate when applied to the soil surface ; atrazine , diuron , monuron and simazine did not inhibit germination but the seedlings when emerged died . within three weeks . all herbicides applied to various levels of soil depth caused a significant reduction in the growth of seedlings. Greatest effects were observed for herbicides applied to the soil surface . the most effective herbicides in the control of germination and subsequent growth of E. odoratum were Atrazine , 2,4- D , diuron , EPTC , molinate , monuron and

Ecology of a dry stream bed in Peshawar, pakistan
S.M. CHAGHTAI AND HABIB- UR-RAHMAN KHATTAK

Ecology of a dry stream bed in Peshawar, pakistan
ABSTRACT:
The dry stream offers a variety of habitats depending on the avaibility of moisture and the extent of biotic disturbance. A greater proportion of the inhabiting plants comprises of the annual weeds of winter crops. The moist sites are invaded in early winter. After the winter rains , only the deep-rooted species survive along the water course . on raised and gravel- excavated sites, only those species thrive which either resist or evade drought . all the sites do not seem to differ much floristically .

Phytosociology of the muslim graveyards of kohat division , NWFP, PAKISTAN
ABSTRACT:
The plant communities of the muslim graveyards of kohat division were studied. The number of species in a stand was controlled by the sand and CaCO3 proportions of the soil. The development status of the vegetation was also determined.

Nodules on roots of casuarina equisetifolia L.
ABSTRACT:
During survey of nodulation in non- legumes of Pakistan, nodules were recorded on roots of casuarina equisetifolia trees growing at Karachi university campus. These plants were compared with casuarina cunninghamiana on the basis of descriptions provided in flora of the Punjab (parker, 1921). It was found that they differ from C. cunninghamiana in the number of epicalyx, size of the cone and time of flowering . these plants were identified as

Estimation of yield losses due to powdery mildew in peas
ABSTRACT:
Loss in yield caused by poedery mildew in 8 varieties of garden pes varied from 10.1- 18.0 % . A correlation of yield loss with PDI showed that American and Alderman were relatively more tolerant than PN 25 and Alaska as they suffered less percentage of loss in yield.

Screening of genetic stock of sugarcane against red rot disease
Muhammad arshad gill and ahmad saleem

Screening of genetic stock of sugarcane against red rot disease
ABSTRACT:
Among the 149 varieties of sugarcane creened against red rot , 57 were immune , 6 resistant , 9 intermediate resistant , 14 intermediate and 63 intermediate susceptible to very highly susceptible. Among the promising varieties L-118, L- 62/96, BL-4 , triton, CoL. 54, Co. 975, CP.57/614 and R-366 were very highly resistant while L-113, L-116, CoL. 29, CoL.44, Co.312, Co 564 , B. 4360 and BL. 19 were highly susceptible. Red rot caused by collectotrichum falcatum went., is te major disease of sugarcane in the country . reduction in weight of 12-41.5 percent , decrease in brix of juice from 2.7 to 21.7 percent and the decrease in expected sugar recovery by 17.1-36.5 percent , depending upon the severity of the disease and the variety planted has been reported (sandhu et al, 1969). Losses due to this disease are especially severe in the areas of high rainfall (saleem and gill, 1981). In the paper the results of screening of advanced lines of sugarcane varieties of sugarcane research institute , faislabad against red
